Dean Alexander Spanos was born on May 26, 1950, in Stockton, California, the United States of America to parents, Alex Spanos and Faye Papafaklis. His parents were both of Greek ancestry.

Dean’s father Alex Spanos, purchased a majority interest in the Chargers team in 1984. He was an American billionaire real estate developer, founder of the A. G. Spanos Companies, and the majority owner of the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League.

Dean Spanos was raised alongside three siblings including Alexandra Spanos Ruhl (sister), Michael Spanos and Dea Spanos Berberian (sister), each of which owns 15% of the Chargers. Regarding his education, Dean Spanos attended Lincoln High School where he received the Lincoln High Hall of Fame Award. He later graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1972.

Dean Spanos took over daily operations from his father in 1994, becoming president and CEO, until he passed operations to his own sons in 2015. However, he took over full ownership after his father passed away in 2018.
