Early-route Pokémon is a fan term commonly used to refer to common Pokémon that you can find in the first few routes and usually have a high catch rate. Each generation has a mammal-like Pokémon, a bird-like Pokémon and a bug-like Pokémon. These Pokémon play the role of the first experience with wild Pokémon for new players and due to this they represent their introductory region and generation in the eyes of fans.
Other commonly referred Pokémon groups with member from every, or almost every, generation are: first partner Pokémon, Electric rodents, Fossil Pokémon, Pseudo-legendary Pokémon, main Legendary duo or trio, minor Legendary group or Mew variants.
List of Pokémon
The mammal-set
- All Pokémon in this set are in the Field Egg Group.
- Most of the Pokémon in this set are part of the two-stage evolutionary line.
- Pokémon in this set usually have Normal-type but some of them also have Dark-type.
Regional vermin
So far, each generation have introduced at least one dual-stage mammal Normal-type early-route Pokémon. This group of Pokémon is called regional vermin or regional rodent despite only a few of them being rodents. These Pokémon are commonly used by the Youngster trainer class.
Pokéfan Darcy uses a team of Pokémon that consists of all five regional vermins that existed at the time.
Other mammals
Starting with Generation III, a trend of other early mammal Pokémon emerges. This groups doesn't have its own name and is often grouped with regional vermins together as regional mammals. Pokémon of this group are often based on pet animals like cats or dogs and often have the Dark type.
The bird-set
This groups is called regional bird and it consists of dual- or three-stage evolutionary line of early-route bird-based Pokémon. Each generation introduces at least one regional bird. These Pokémon are commonly used by the Youngster trainer class.

- Most Pokémon in this set are part of the three-stage evolutionary line.
- All Pokémon in this set are Flying-type.
The bug-set
This group is called regional bug and it consists of dual- or three-stage evolutionary line of early-route Bug-type Pokémon that appear in some kind of forest location. These Pokémon very often evolve early, go through larval and cocoon stages and they often come in pairs of a sympathetic and an antagonistic evolutionary line. These Pokémon are commonly used by the Bug Catcher trainer class.

- All Pokémon in this set are Bug-type.
- Most of the unevolved forms and not-fully evolved of Pokémon in this set cannot learn TMs and HMs at all until it has reached to its final form.
- Most of the Pokémon in this set evolve early by levelling up.
