Kevin David Mitnick, born August 6, 1963, went on to become one of America’s most famous computer security consultants, authors, and convicted hackers.

He was arrested in 1995 and spent five years in jail for a bunch of computer and communications crimes.

Following a widely publicized investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) apprehended Mitnick at his residence in Raleigh, NC, on February 15th, 1995, for federal offenses relating to a period of two and a half years of computer hacking, including computer fraud and wire fraud, in which he was found to be in possession of cloned mobile telephones, more than one hundred cloned cellular telephone codes, and numerous false documents.

On December 17th, 1997, Yahoo!’s website was hacked and a message was displayed requesting Mitnick’s immediate release.

The message stated that all recent visitors to Yahoo! had been infected by a computer worm, which would cause a major disruption on Christmas Day if Mitnick was not removed.

Yahoo! denied the allegations, claiming that the worm did not exist.
