Lake Verity (Japanese: シンジ湖 Shinji Lake) is a location in the Sinnoh region, and part of the Obsidian Fieldlands in the Hisui region. At the center of the lake, there is a cave that is named Verity Cavern, which is home to the Legendary Pokémon Mesprit, the guardian of the lake and the Being of Emotion.
The lake, along with Lake Valor and Lake Acuity, is tied to the myth of the creation of the Pokémon world, specifically the creation of spirit. According to Volo, it was formed from the crater of a volcano.
In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the player and their rival, Barry, come here after watching reports of a Red Gyarados on television in hopes of seeing something similarly amazing. This is also where the player will receive their first partner Pokémon in Sinnoh after being attacked by Starly. In Platinum, the player and Barry instead come here to catch the Legendary Pokémon of the lake, only to meet Cyrus for the first time. They will then leave when Barry realizes that they don't have any Poké Balls. The first partner Pokémon will instead be obtained on Route 201. During the main story, Mars of Team Galactic raids the lake and captures Mesprit for the purpose of creating the Red Chain.
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the player, Volo, and Adaman or Irida come here during Mission 14: "The Trial of Lake Verity" to obtain Mesprit's Plume.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus
An Alpha Hisuian Goodra can be caught during Mission 14: "The Trial of Lake Verity", which becomes available after completion of Mission 13: "Disaster Looming". Once defeated, Goodra does not respawn. It is coded to never be Shiny.
Mesprit can be caught during Mission 21: "The Plate of the Lakes", which becomes available after completion of Mission 20: "The Researcher of Myths". If fled from or knocked out, it respawns immediately without leaving the area. It is coded to never be Shiny.

Dawn encountering MespritIn Following A Maiden's Voyage!, Dawn and Piplup stopped by Lake Verity while on their way back to Professor Rowan's Research Lab in Sandgem Town. At the lake, they briefly encountered a mysterious figure flying over the water's surface. Dawn would eventually learn that the figure she saw was in fact the Legendary Pokémon said to be the guardian of the lake, Mesprit.
In Strategy Begins at Home!, Sayer hired Team Rocket to fish in the lake for Goldeen for their Goldeen Scoop booth at the Twinleaf Festival.
In The Needs of the Three!, it was explained that Lake Verity, and indeed all three of Sinnoh's lakes, are the entrances to another world where the lake guardians reside, and they do not actually live in the lakes themselves. Later, a pink whirlpool appeared in the lake due to Pokémon Hunter J dropping the Galactic Bomb into Lake Valor. From this portal emerged Mesprit, who quickly teleported away to Lake Valor. This was witnessed by Professor Rowan and his assistants.
Pokémon Evolutions
Lake Verity appeared in a flashback in The Rival. Lucas and Barry were attacked by a pair of wild Starly there, but they were able to fend them off using Pokémon they found from a briefcase, with Lucas choosing Chimchar and Barry picking Piplup.

Diamond & Pearl arc
In Dramatic Drapion & Crafty Kricketune I, Diamond revealed that he and Pearl had visited Lake Verity when they were four years old in the hopes of seeing a Red Gyarados, but had gotten separated from each other. Before Pearl found him again, Diamond had seen a strange, bright light in the middle of the lake and passed out.
In Hurrah for Rapidash, Diamond parted ways with Pearl and Platinum in order to protect Mesprit from Team Galactic. However, Mars managed to reach the lake before him in Yikes, Yanmega! II, and proceeded to take Diamond's mother hostage. While Diamond was able to help his mother escape, he was unable to stop Team Galactic from capturing Mesprit in Mixing It Up with Machamp, following its emergence after the Galactic Bomb was detonated at Lake Valor. Determined to save Mesprit, Diamond was able to sneak aboard the shuttle carrying Mesprit, and traveled to the Team Galactic HQ aboard it.
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!
Lake Verity debuted in In Search of the Legendary Pokémon Dialga!!, where Mitsumi arrived there on her bike and subsequently met Hareta, who saved her from a wild Onix.
In Team Galactic's Ultimate Warrior, Cyrus and Team Galactic were seen at Lake Verity, succeeding in capturing Mesprit and bringing it to the Team Galactic HQ.
Trivia
- After the battle between the player and the wild Starly in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, a square of tall grass can be seen to have disappeared when the player and their friend walk out of the tall grass. It is where the briefcase which was taken away by Dawn/Lucas was originally. The square remains in Pokémon Platinum even though the same event did not occur in the game.
- At each of Sinnoh's lakes, a TM can be found containing a powerful move of a different type. Lake Verity's TM is the Fire-type TM38 (Fire Blast).
- Lake Verity's Japanese name shares the same Japanese name of Paul.
- In the anime, Lake Verity is much smaller than its game counterpart and the other lakes in anime, resembling more of a large pond.
- In the scripted battle against a wild Starly, if the player's Pokémon's HP becomes low enough that its HP bar turns red, the wild Starly will flee. This attempts to prevent the player from losing the battle. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl only, both Pokémon are also prevented from scoring critical hits.
- If the player's first partner Pokémon faints in this battle (which is possible if the player's Pokémon takes enough damage to knock it out while its HP bar is still yellow), the game will freeze.[1]
- At the beginning of the game, the water level is too low to surf. After the events of Lake Valor, the water level rises due to Mesprit coming out of hiding, allowing the player to surf.
Name origin
Verity means "truth", possibly derived from Japanese 真実 shinjitsu (truth). This is related to Mesprit's status as the Emotion Pokémon, as the truth often conveys strong emotions.
Shinji is derived from 心情 shinjō (emotions), as indicated by a signpost in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl that provided an annotation of its name fully written in kanji as 心情湖.
