Nicholas Ma: Who Is Yo-Yo Mas Son? What Does Nicholas Ma Do For A Living?

Nicholas Ma, son of Yo-Yo Ma, is an award-winning writer, director, and producer based in New York City.

He produced WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?, a documentary on Fred Rogers, which became the all-time highest-grossing bio-documentary.

This past year, he directed SUITE NO. 1 PRELUDE, which screened at the New York Film Festival.

Born in 1980, his most recent feature script, MABEL was awarded the Sloan Prize and invited to the Film Independent Screenwriting Lab.

He is currently in development on several other documentary projects with Tremolo and Motto Pictures. He received his M.F.A. from Tisch grad Film.

Prior to his career in film, he led global economic policy for then-Senator John Kerry on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, after working at McKinsey & Company in New York and Shanghai. He is a graduate of Harvard College.

Nicholas’ father, Yo-Yo Ma, started as a child prodigy cellist and has played in countless countries, from folk music to classical melodies to Chinese melodies to the tangos, performing with an ancient cello from Italy valued in millions.

He has played for presidents, princes, premiers, and billionaires. He has recorded nearly 100 albums and has won the Grammy Award for a record 18 times for a cellist, we believe.

He has a couple of other awards and recognitions, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
